Each northern Nevada apprenticeship program is run by its union. Review the information on this page to learn program requirements and details. Then contact the specific union to get started.
Bricklayers build and maintain walls, facades, arches, and other structures using brick, block, or stone on residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Refractory bricklayers work in high-heat environments like power plants and steel mills, installing heat-resistant materials to line furnaces, kilns, and other equipment. Tile setters install ceramic, stone, and glass tile on floors, walls, countertops, pools, and more. Both trades may work indoors or outdoors, sometimes using scaffolding for elevated or intricate installations.
Northern Nevada offers two apprenticeship programs: bricklaying and tile setting. Both programs typically take 3 years, requiring 144 hours of classroom instruction and 1,500 hours of on-the-job training annually. Classes are typically held in the evenings. While the apprenticeship program is offered at no cost, apprentices are responsible for book fees, start-up tools (~$70), union dues (~$23/month), and a one-time initiation fee ($100).
Applications are accepted on the first Monday of every month from 8 AM to 12 PM at the Reno
training office (9475 Double R Blvd., Ste. 6). Applicants should bring a legal ID, social security card,
birth certificate, and high school diploma or equivalent.
After applying, the applicant will be assigned a number and usually within three weeks, they are
called in for an interview. The interview consists of a math test, verbal test, and hands-on evaluation.
Based on testing, the applicant is given a score that determines whether they will be accepted into
the apprenticeship program when work becomes available. Upon acceptance, the apprentice will be indentured into the program, pay a $100 initiation fee and three months of union dues for a total cost
of $169, and will begin work with a contractor.

The recruitment process takes place every two years. Applicants must apply online and submit a high school diploma or equivalent. They are then required to take the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test, which covers math, reading, mechanical comprehension, and tool knowledge. Those scoring 70% or higher are invited to a 15–20 minute interview.
Final rankings are based on education, experience, test results, and interview performance. Apprentices are selected starting with the highest-ranked candidates. As apprentices are indentured into the program and join the union, they begin work with a contractor for a one-year probationary period with possible extension based on performance. Eligible applicants remain on the list for two years.
Applications are accepted year-round by appointment at the Finishing Trades Institute West – Reno (523 Vista Blvd., Sparks, NV 89434). To schedule an application appointment, call (510) 785-8467 or (775) 356-8567. Applicants must complete a test—25 math questions in one hour for painting and drywall, or a 72-question math and mechanical test in two hours for floor covering—and bring a valid driver’s license and social security card. Veterans should bring their DD-214. Successful applicants may receive a Certificate of Intent to Hire to solicit their own work with a union contractor or may remain on an eligibility list until contractors request apprentices for work.
Applications must be completed online. Required documents include a driver’s license, social security card, high school diploma or equivalent, and OSHA 10 or 30 certification (a course link will be provided if not already completed).
A list of signatory contractors will be given for applicants to seek employment. Once hired, a Sponsorship Letter will be issued by the contractor, pending completion of all apprenticeship requirements: drug test, orientation, initiation fee, and first month’s dues.
Alternatively, applicants may join the qualified applicant list to be contacted when a contractor requests an apprentice.
Cement masons install curbs and gutters, sidewalks, footings, slabs, and bridge decks on commercial and public works projects. They also install driveways, lead walks, steps, and patios on new commercial and residential developments.
Plasterers apply and finish materials to building surfaces, which include shaping and sticking foam pieces using adhesive or mechanical installation. Plasterers also spray fireproofing materials to steel beams, columns, and the underside of metal decking.
Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, PTO, holidays, disability, and 401(k) with match are also provided on top of hourly wage.
A range is provided for hourly wages because the wage depends on the specific program. Please contact Labor Relations Manager for specific wages.
Applications are submitted online at www.nnsmhvactraining.org. Required documents include a driver’s license, social security card, and optional items like a resume, OSHA 10 certification, or DD-214 for veterans. Official high school transcripts or GED certificates must be sent directly from the issuing institution by mail to P.O. Box 1342, Sparks, NV 89432, or by email to info@smart26jatc.org. As apprentices are indentured into the program, they join the union and begin work.
